FAQs

If someone passes away at home, you will need to call the GP's office of the person who has passed away to notify them. The GP will attend to the property to confirm the death. If the death was expected, then the GP will issue a medical cause of death certificate. This is an important document that you will need to register the death.

Where a death is sudden or unexpected or the person who has passed away has not seen a doctor in the 14 days prior to their death, the GP will report the death to the coroner. The coroner will then seek to establish the cause of death.

You can contact us once the GP has attended the property, and we can arrange to collect your loved one. We will guide you through the necessary steps, including contacting the appropriate authorities, transporting the deceased, and beginning the funeral planning process.

If your loved one is taken to the coroner, you can still contact us, and we will liaise with the coroner on your behalf. Once the coroner gives us permission to collect your loved one, we will do so and bring them into our care.

When someone passes away in a hospital and the death was expected, the doctor will issue a medical cause of death certificate. Your loved one will remain in the care of the hospital mortuary until you have appointed a funeral director.

If the death in the hospital was unexpected, then the hospital may undertake a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. If the cause of death cannot be established, then the coroner will be involved.

This is usually done by a family member or spouse; however, the death can be registered by the person who will be making the funeral arrangements or anyone who was present at the death or lived at the same address where the person passed away. In England, all deaths must be registered with the local registrar’s office within 5 days of the person passing away; failure to do so is a criminal offence. However, it should be noted that a death cannot be registered if the coroner is involved and has not concluded their investigations.

You must present the medical cause of death certificate to the registrar along with other documentation about the person who has passed away, such as their birth certificate, driver’s licence, passport, and proof of address.

Ensure that you check the spelling of names, date of birth, and other information on the certificate. If there is an error, the registrar will levy a charge to make amendments.

When the death is registered, you will be issued a green certificate for burial or cremation and a death certificate.
